Origami Blossom Heart.
I have a new Valentine’s Day Origami project to share with you today and it’s just in time for Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking for a last-minute Valentine’s decoration to show someone you care then these origami blossom hearts might be just the thing.
I have to admit (even though I try my best to be organised) I’m a bit of a last-minute Valentine’s gift giver. I usually end up making something like these origami corner bookmark hearts or these heart-shaped sugar cubes. Luckily, nothing beats a handmade keepsake even if it is last minute!
I think these pretty little hearts are bound to put a smile on anyone’s face. Perfect for a friend or loved one. And bonus, they’re a lot easier to make than they look. All you need is a piece of paper and a little practice and you’ll be folding hundreds of them in no time.
What to do with Origami Hearts:
Once you’ve made one origami blossom heart, you’re sure to want to make more. Here’s what you can do with them:
Make a love note a bit more special by folding it into a pretty paper heart.
Glue them to a card or envelope.
String them up as a garland.
Use to decorate a larger gift.
Scatter them across a table.
Stick them to some cocktail sticks and decorate a cake.
Hang them from a fireplace.
Or hide them around the house and do a Valentine-themed scavenger hunt with the little ones.
Supplies:
Origami Paper (this is a good basic pack with a wide range of colours to get you started)
Paper Trimmer to cut your paper to size.
While you can make these with most types of paper I recommend using origami paper or other thin paper like gift wrap as it’s easy to fold and helps your origami keep its shape.
How to make Origami Blossom Hearts.
1. Start by taking a piece of origami paper and folding it in half to make a rectangle. Cut in half down the crease.
If you don’t have any origami paper around you can use any size of paper that you like but just remember that you need it to be twice as long as it is wide.
So if you’re using a 6-inch piece of paper it needs to be 3 inches wide and an 8-inch piece of paper would need to be 4 inches wide.
2. Fold in half with the coloured side on the outside, crease and open.
3. Bring the bottom 2 corners into the centre fold and crease.
4. Open back out and this time bring the top 2 corners to the centre and crease.
5. Open back out. You should now have what looks like 2 squares with an ‘x’ creased through the centre of each one.
6. Take the left side and collapse it down towards the centre. Make sure to press the folds flat.
7. Repeat on the right-hand side.
8. Take the top layer of the triangle on the left and fold the top and bottom points to meet the center point on the left.
9. Repeat on the right hand side. You should have 4 small triangles.
10. Now you are going to make a squash fold with the flaps you just made.
Carefully open them out and press the tip down so it meets the centre fold line.
11. Repeat with the other 3 small triangles.
12. Take the 2 corners of each square and fold in towards the centre crease to make what looks like a small kite.
13. Repeat for the other 3 squares.
14. We’re now going to make some more squash folds just like we did in step
15. Open out each small kite and press the tip down towards the center folds.
This is what gives the flower effect in the middle.
16. Flip your heart over. You’ll see your heart is made up of 2 triangles with a crease down the centre.
17. Fold one of these triangles down over the other one. The top of your heart should now be revealed.
18. Lastly you can shape your heart by folding in the 2 outside points.
19. Flip over to reveal the finished heart.
