Finger knitting (sometimes called finger weaving) is a quick and easy way to make a simple braid using yarn. You don’t need any special equipment, only some yarn, a pair of scissors and your hands. Even complete beginners will be knitting up a necklace or scarf in no time at all.
If you’ve ever wanted to have a go at knitting but haven’t quite known where to start I think finger knitting is a great beginner step to learning. It’s a great way for both kids and adults to get used to working with wool. Once you’ve got the basics down, you can easily whip up a scarf in 30 minutes.
Not only does finger knitting help teach the basic principles of knotting the yarn but it can also teach the importance of tension in knitting. Pull the yarn to tight and it becomes difficult to work with. Too loose and you can end up with gaping holes.

Tips for beginners.
For beginners I recommend choosing a chunky yarn or t-shirt yarn. It’s easier to work with and has the added bonus of knitting up quicker than a traditional wool. You can make necklaces, bracelets, scarves, hats and even party decorations. And when you’ve had a bit of practice how about a cosy chunky knit blanket or giant floor cushion.
