Clay Bowl Ideas.
Let’s talk air dry clay. Air dry clay is one of my favourite craft materials to work with. I’ve used it to make pots, napkin rings, coasters, tealight holders and my personal favourite, stamped clay bowls.
Have you ever made anything using air dry clay? It’s so easy to use and as it’s a natural earth clay that dries hard without baking no kiln or firing is needed.
This makes it a great choice for the beginner crafter all the way up to the most advanced as it can be used to make almost anything without any special tools or equipment. Even if you’ve never taken a pottery class before I think you’ll be surprised how easy it is to make a cute clay craft.
How to Make a Clay Bowl.
One of the easiest things to make if you’re just getting started is a simple air dry clay bowl or catch-all jewellery dish. Over the years I’ve seen a lot of different ways to make clay bowls so I decided to collect some of my favourites together in this post so you can try making some of them as well.
There are pinch pots that are hand-formed, bowls that have been moulded using other bowls, ones that have been stamped, painted and pressed and ones that have been cut and shaped into leaves, eyes and even hands.
And once you’ve made your bowl or dish, don’t forget to decorate it. Included below are some tutorials for bowls that have been painted or imprinted with patterns from stamps and plants and even had holes poked through and wrapped with raffia and twine.
If you’ve ever wanted to make your own clay bowl at home I hope some of these ideas inspire you to get started and give it a go.

What is Air Dry Clay?
Air-dry clay is a wonderful alternative to traditional clay that you leave to dry and harden over time. It can be rolled, stamped, coiled and shaped into anything you want making it a great craft material for both kids and adults alike.
However, as it doesn’t require a firing in a kiln to harden it does mean that your finished piece can still absorb moisture and can become soft if it comes into contact with water. This means that it’s not food-safe so anything made with air dry clay should be used for decorative purposes only.
You can find more information about how to seal air dry clay here at HOW TO GLAZE AIR DRY CLAY.
Supplies:
There are several kinds of air dry clay available. Nearly all of the projects below use either Crayola Air Dry Clay or my personal favourite DAS Air-Hardening Modeling Clay.
Not all types of clay work as well as others. Depending on the type of clay you use some can be fragile and crumbly. I’ve put together a list of some of my favourite air dry clays below.
Here are three I recommend:
Crayola Air Dry Clay White / Crayola Air Dry Clay Terracotta
Das Air-Hardening Clay White / Das Air-Hardening Clay Terracotta / Das Air-Hardening Clay Stone
Jovi Premium Air Dry Clay White, Grey & Terracotta
And a couple of alternatives I haven’t used personally but are popular and have good reviews.
