Origami Paper Mushrooms.

I'm always looking for fun Fall paper crafts and these origami mushrooms are my new favourite. They're a great way to bring a touch of fall into your home, and they make perfect Halloween decorations too!

They were a little tricky to make and did need a little practice but I think you'll agree they were worth the effort. If you're making them with younger kids I recommend giving them a hand with the harder steps towards the end.

I've got nine made so far and I think I'm going to use them to make a garland to hang from the fireplace mantel. I think the blue patterned paper is going to work well for Halloween as well as Autumn.

Fun Ways To Use Your Origami Mushrooms.

Once you've made a cute little paper mushroom or two, here are a few ideas of what you can do with them.

  • Mushroom Garland: You can string them together with some thread to make a fun garland for your room or drape them across a bookshelf for a magical forest vibe.

  • Scrapbooking: Glue them to your scrapbook pages as a fun 3D embellishment.

  • Gift Wrapping: Need a cute way to jazz up a gift? Attach an origami mushroom to the top of a wrapped present. They'd also be fantastic attached to plain brown paper gift bags to be used as party favours.

  • Origami Mushroom Magnets: Why not turn your origami mushrooms into magnets? All you need is a little magnet tape or glue some small magnet strips to the back of the mushrooms, and voila! You’ve got some quirky, handmade fridge magnets.

Whether you’re setting up for a spooky party or simply love crafting for the autumn season, trust me, these easy paper mushrooms are a must-try.

Supplies:

  • Origami Paper - I got mine from Sostrene Grene last year. They change their papers each season so it’s always worth popping into the store to see what is in stock.

How To Make An Origami Mushroom.

1. Take a square piece of origami paper and fold it in half along the diagonal to make a triangle.

You want the coloured or patterned side facing in. This will be the colour of your mushroom cap.

2. Open the paper back out.

3. Fold the left-hand side of the paper in to meet the diagonal crease.

4. Repeat on the other side to make a kite shape.

You should now have a triangle flap at the top of your folded paper.

5. Flip your paper over and fold the triangle flap back.

This will be your mushroom cap.

6. Flip your paper back over again. You want the point of the triangle at the top.

7. Fold the top point down (making sure to keep hold of the flat bottom edge) to make a one inch section.

You should now have made 2 small triangles on either side.

8. Take the top right corner of your folded section and fold it down to meet the edge.

You want to make a crease that runs from the right corner to the centre.

9. Repeat on the left-hand side.

10. Now for the tricky part.

You’re going to carefully unfold the fold you just made and adjust it until it lines up with the centre crease.

11. Press down to flatten the fold.

12. Repeat on the other side.

This is the part I found the hardest. You need to get the folds to meet as symmetrically as you can in the middle otherwise you can end up with a wonky mushroom.

13. To finish your mushroom and give it some shape fold the bottom point up to meet the middle folds.

Next fold in the side and top points to make small triangle folds.

14. Finally, flip your finished origami over to reveal your mushroom.

How cute is that?! I love the contrast from the dark blue patterned paper against the pale blue side.

You can leave your mushrooms as they are or add some details with white spots or stickers.
