DIY Origami Bookmark.
I’ve been making these origami corner bookmarks for years and although a simple scrap of paper can do the trick in a bind, it’s nice to have something a bit more special for those favourite books you like to read year after year.
If you've never made any origami before, don't worry, these lovely bookmarks are incredibly beginner-friendly.
Make them for yourself or place one inside a book as a gift for a friend or family member who loves to read. You can even decorate them if you’d like to make them even more unique.
Easy Origami Butterflies.
I love the simplicity of these bookmarks, especially how the bright colours contrast with the white paper. Quick, easy to make and practical as well. My favourite kind of papercraft project.
I’ve included step-by-step instructions below as well as a video tutorial for anyone who needs a bit more help.
Supplies:
I used standard origami paper that is coloured on one side and plain white on the reverse but double-sided coloured paper like this one or patterned paper like this one would look fantastic as well.

Scissors/Paper Trimmer
I recommend using origami paper for any paper folding project but any kind of thin paper will work. Here are a few alternatives that you probably already have on hand.
Regular Printer Paper,
Magazines,
Old Books,
And Maps.
I even have some printable origami paper you can download and use for FREE. Simply download, print and cut into 7x7-inch squares.
Butterfly Bookmark Origami Step By Step.
1. Each butterfly needs a rectangular piece of paper.
If you’re starting with a square piece of origami paper you need to cut off one third.
It needs to be 1 ½ times longer than it is wide. For example, the piece I used was 15cm x 15cm. I trimmed it down by 5cm to make it 10cm x 15cm.
2. Fold in half lengthways keeping the colour on the outside.
Top Tip: To have the colour showing on the inside part of the wings instead of the outside fold your paper with the white side on the outside.
3. Rotate 90 degrees and fold in half again.
4. Open back out and lay flat.
5. Take the right-hand side and open it. Squash down to make a triangle by lining up the top fold to the center fold.
6. Press flat and fold the flap back to the right.
7. Repeat on the left-hand side.
8. Stand it up and fold the first flap on the right back to the left like a page in a book.
It should look like a small house with a large triangle for the roof.
9. Fold the left inner corner out to create a small triangle.
The point of the triangle needs to overlap the coloured section.
10. Repeat on the right-hand side.
11. Take one of the folds and unfold and open.
12. Push the folds inwards to make a triangle.
13. Press flat.
14. Repeat on the other side.
15. To make the wings take one of the folds and gently pull down.
16. Press flat.
17. Repeat on the other.
18. You should now have a beautiful butterfly bookmark.

How to use your Origami Butterfly Corner Bookmark.
When you turn your bookmark over you will see it has a corner pocket ready to save your place in your notebook or book. Simply slide the pocket onto the corner of the page to use.
