A DIY paper heart makes a lovely gift all year round but particularly in February. For anyone not into the whole flowers and chocolates thing I think a sweet handmade paper heart would be the ideal Valentines treat.
I must admit that I’ve not always been the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day but you know I can never say no to my favourite paper craft so of course I have a soft spot for origami hearts. I’ve been pinning A LOT of them to my Valentine’s Origami board on Pinterest so I thought it was about time I shared some of them here as well.
From heart-shaped bookmarks to cute heart topped boxes, folded envelopes to simple heart bouquets I think there’s something here to make anyone’s Valentine’s Day special
Origami Hearts.
Not sure where to start? There are plenty of origami heart tutorials to choose from but if you’re a beginner when it comes to origami or just looking for an easy project to do while watching the tv I recommend the simple origami heart.
As the name suggests it’s a very simple model to make once you’ve got the hang of it. You can use a standard 6-inch by 6-inch (15cm) piece of origami paper and fold one in under a minute with a bit of practice.
For anyone looking for more of a challenge you can have a go at any of the origami heart-topped boxes or even a 3D modular origami heart.
Once you’ve got the technique down you turn these sweet little hearts into anything from necklaces to garlands to bookmarks. Slip them in a card or wrap them up ready to give to your Valentine.
What to do with your Origami Hearts.
Make them for your loved ones, your partner, your family, your bestie or even just for yourself. Make one or a whole bunch and use them to decorate a card, a gift, a cake or a whole room.
Here are a few of my favourite ways to use them:
Stick down any flaps and use them as gift tags on a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates.
Fold it as a hidden love note.
Hang by some thread and decorate some decorative branches for a cute display.
Frame your favourite heart and display it on the wall.
Dip them in glitter (eco-friendly of course).
Thread onto to yarn for a sweet gift for a child.
Make a giant heart from gift wrap and stick it on the wall.
String them together as a garland.
Make a paper heart mobile and hang it from the ceiling.
Write on your guests’ names and use them as a sweet handmade place holder (good for weddings as well).
Pop a magnet on the back and use it as a delightful little gift.
Supplies:
Scissors
Glue
Pens to decorate.
I always recommend using origami paper although any thin paper will do. If you don’t have any origami paper on hand here are a few alternatives that you probably already have at home.
