Origami Christmas Stocking.
I’ve been busy creating some last-minute Holiday crafts. Are you ready for another quick and easy Christmas origami project?
First, we had the Origami Santa Hat and next up is this super cute Origami Stocking or Santa Boot. These mini DIY paper stockings may not be able to hold any gifts but they do look fantastic as tree ornaments or gift tags.
They’re a good origami project for beginners as although they look a little tricky they’re actually quite simple to make (don’t worry there’s a video tutorial as well if that’s more your thing).
And don’t forget you can add some personality to your stockings by decorating them with embellishments like stickers, pom poms, tassels and even glitter (the eco-friendly kind of course).
Just follow the step by step instructions below and you’ll be making your own Origami Stockings in no time.
What to do with your finished origami stockings:
I love these mini stockings as they’re so versatile. Use them as placeholders on your Holiday table or maybe make a whole bunch and use them to make your own DIY advent calendar. Check out some more of my favourite ways to use them below.
Thread on some ribbon and decorate your Christmas tree with hundreds of hanging origami stockings or as many as you can make anyway 😉
Grab a roll of gift wrap and make some giant stockings to hang from the fireplace mantel.
Make a mini origami wreath and decorate it with tiny paper boots.
Stick to a blank card to make a unique handmade Christmas card.
Or pop them on a gift or a bottle of wine as a cute finishing touch.
Supplies:
Although I recommend using origami paper (you can even get a cute festive version) for any paper folding project, here are a few alternatives that you probably already have on hand.
Regular Printer Paper,
Magazines,
Maps,
Old Books,
And Newspapers.
While you can make these with most types of paper I recommend using origami paper or other thin paper like gift wrap as it’s easy to fold and helps your origami keep its shape.
I even have some printable origami paper you can download and use for FREE. Simply download, print and cut into 7x7-inch squares.
How to make Origami Stockings / Santa Boots.
1. Take your piece of square origami paper and fold it in half to make a rectangle with the coloured side on the outside.
2. Open back out and fold the left edge in about 1/2 cm. This will make the white trim at the top of your stocking.
3. Turn your paper over so the coloured side is facing down and fold the bottom edge up to meet the middle crease.
4. Repeat and fold the top edge down to meet at the centre crease also.
5. Fold in half by bringing the top edge down to meet the bottom edge.
You want the crease at the top and the opening at the bottom.
6. Fold the left-hand side (the side with the white trim) in about 1/3 of the way.
7. Unfold.
8. Fold the right-hand side in to the left (the crease you’ve just made) to make a diagonal crease.
9. Unfold.
10. Open up the bottom flap and press along the diagonal creases to make a mountain fold. Press flat to make a house shape.
11. Fold the bottom of the house shaped flap up using the bottom edge of the stocking as a guide.
12. Fold the same flap in half to the right to make the boot shape.
13. Fold the top toe part of the stocking down to make a small triangle.
14. Fold the triangle back the other way before opening it up and folding it inward.
15. To finish fold the bottom corners back to form a toe shape at the end of your stocking.
16. Tape to a card or gift or maybe thread onto some string and hang on the tree or along the fireplace mantel.
